I'm Charlie Thiry

A 27 year old Belgian medical doctor who studied and trained in South Africa with five years of clinical experience. I completed my community service year at a district hospital in rural Limpopo before relocating to Ireland in 2024. I currently work as an Emergency Department Registrar in Cork. My primary interest lies in internal medicine, with a particular passion for cardiology and electrophysiology. I have successfully completed the FCP(SA) primaries, as well as the MRCPI Part I and II written examinations in general internal medicine.

Emergency Department Registrar

Mercy University Hospital. Cork, Ireland

I currently work as a registrar at Mercy University Hospital’s (MUH) 24/7 emergency department. MUH is the second largest hospital in Cork, responsible for approximately 40,000 annual emergency department attendances.

Community Service Medical Officer

Philadelphia Hospital. Limpopo, South Africa

Completed community service working primarily in the internal medicine department at Philadelphia hospital in Limpopo. I was responsible for the day to day running of two acute medical wards and performed monthly overtime duties in a 24-hour emergency department.

  

 
 
Jan 2020 - Feb 2020

Completed a six week clinical internship in cardiology and internal medicine at Panzi regional hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Panzi Hospital has earned a global reputation as the preeminent treatment centre for survivors of sexual violence in conflict under the leadership of Dr. Mukwege, the recipient of the UN 2008 Human Rights Award and the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. I worked under Dr. Mukwege and the internal medicine team and was exposed to a vast array of tropical medicine and sexual violence survivors.

ECG APPtitude

Assisted Cardiologist Charle Viljoen under the division of Cardiology at the University of Cape Town with the creation, French translation and launch of ECG Apptitude, a comprehensive reference guide for ECG analysis and interpretation. I was involved in content creation, graphic user interface design and translated the complete app content into French.
